The aims are:

to develop discussion of creative writing practices between youths and students of college and university
to enhance creative writing skills
to encourage creative writing practice
to promote collaboration between youths, students and writers in the creative writing phenomenon

We would like to offer workshop of a day. We envisage that the workshop will focus on a key note speech on creative writing, creative writing and essay and creative writing and fiction.

Why this event is a good idea:

This event is a good idea because creative writing is an emerging academic subject in the world. Writing as a discipline is increasing in Nepal with numbers of newspapers growing every year. Students and youths have very strong desire to write and get published. However, they have little experience and confidence as writers of creative writing. We also have a track record in this field but now need support to expand and meet the demand that we have identified. This idea was generated by Kathmandu Don Bosco Alumni in Jan 2010.

Workshop On Appreciative Inquiry

After the successful 2nd annual meeting, Kathmandu Don Bosco Alumni organized a workshop on positive thinking. The program was titled “Appreciative Inquiry" and it was facilitated by Mr. R.C. Lamichhane, Executive Director of Institute for Conflict Management Peace and Development.

The workshop started with the title "Discover the Opportunity through Positive Thinking". The objective of the workshop was to motivate teachers to appreciate their profession, as many people believe teaching is the last profession to enter.

Teachers, students and administrative members of Kathmandu Don Bosco Higher Secondary School participated in the workshop. The six hour long workshop gave an insight to social psychology, transformation, change strategy, positive attitude and designing the future. It also included discussions, question-answer session, documentary show and acknowledgement. It not only helped the teachers to appreciate their work but also appreciate their associates.

The craze and glamour of documentary making in Nepal is increasing. To make students aware about the process of documentary making KDBC Alumni organized a program with documentary filmmaker Shekhar Kharel. In the program Shekar Kharel’s popular documentary December Blues was screened. December Blues is about how Kathmanduties are unaffected and unaware of the fact that other parts of Nepal are terrorized and demolished because of the Maoist conflict. It is also a reality check of how the Nepalese youngsters are drifting away from their culture, traditions and social norms. The faculty members and students praised the documentary. The second documentary show was about climbing Mt.Everest. It’s amazing to experience the beauty of Mt. Everest without having to climb it. The breath-taking scenery would make every Nepalese feel proud that they and Mt. Everest share the same land as home. There are many beautiful things in this world that are meant to be shared. KDBC Alumni believes in sharing its happiness, sorrow or knowledge.

Fund for Koshi Flood Victims

Fund raising program for the Koshi flood victims is one of the most efficient social works that KDBC Alumni has done. The Koshi flood that occurred a year ago destroyed the thousands of household of the Nepalese people including numbers of lives of the people.

The fund raising program was enabled by the dynamic alumni students within the KDBC premises. Students and teachers were supportive to make this program successful. The teachers contributed their half day salary for the flood victims. All the streams of students of KDBC also supported this program by deducting their tiffin money open heartedly for a good cause. The alumni students also donated few amounts. The total sum was Rs. 51, 111 (Fifty-one thousand one hundred and eleven) which was later sent to Prime Minister Relief Fund through Kantipur Publications.

Every great journey begins with a single step. That’s what we have taken, a single step, with the Kathmandu Donbosco Alumni. I thank the Alumni body members, teachers and friends for supporting the Alumni to make a successful completion of one year. Our infant- Kathmandu Donbosco Alumni- is one year old and it’s growing. Our vision is simple: to create a bigger network of passed out students of Don Bosco and be socially active. Each day we are closer to our goal and that’s because we are in a network to extend further.I am confident that Alumni will earn both name and fame in the coming years and be a powerful network in connecting Donboscions scattered all around the world.

CLEANLINESS CAMPAIGN 2009: A Glance

Our initiatives

The pollution level in Kathmandu is alarming. Kathmandu Don Bosco felt a need to create awareness among the local community. So, a weeklong cleaning campaign was jointly organized by Kathmandu Don Bosco Alumni and Third Eye Youth Club, a local club of New Baneshwore. The campaign that started on 5th of April ended on 11^th April, 2009.

On the first day of the campaign, a rally was organized from the college premise to Buddhanagar, Shankhamul and the rally finally ended in New Baneshwor. Large number of students, teachers, and members of KDBC Alumni and Third Eye Youth club that participated in the rally cleaned the New Baneshwor area on the first day.

Throughout the week, students, teachers and members of KDBC Alumni and Third Eye Youth Club cleaned New Baneshwor, Everest Bank area, Krishna Tower area, Buddha Nagar area and Shankhamul area. KDBC Alumni members and KDBSC current students were involved in the cleaning campaign.

KDBC principal Kapil Dev Regmi, Vice Principal Samjhana Kharel, Science incharge Rajendra Pd. Pangeni, Assistance In-charge Udaya Raj Paudel, Morning shift Assistant In-charge Mahabir Paudyal, Finance officer Madhu Paudel, and teachers Krishna Maharjan and Laxmi Prashad Bastola actively participated in the campaign for a good cause.

There was a bandh on the second day but the alumni members and the students continued their work. The cleaning campaign was not only aimed for cleaning purpose but also to make the local community aware that garbage and waste should not be scattered on the street or on open spaces just because it is convenient.

Likewise, the third and fourth day areas of Buddha Nagar and Shankhamul were covered. On the fifth day Cleaning Campaign moved from Shankhamul to New Baneswor and then ended in front of Kathmandu Don Bosco premises. Onlookers and passerby praised the initiative and some helped by donating carton boxes. On the very last day of the campaign, all the participants gathered and applauded for themselves and the week long program ended with refreshments.
